Celebrate CHARLES MINGUS today: Jazz Art

Found this amazing site loaded with tasty cover artwork for many genres of music. Just look at these inspiring, pieces by my fave Jazz “graphicist” David Livingstone Martin!!

Quoting from one fantastic site at Squidoo, David Stone Martin and the Art of Jazz: David Stone Martin was one of the most prolific and influential graphic designers of the postwar era, with his signature hand sketched graphics with two or three primary colors, perfectly capturing the energy and spontaneity of the jazz idiom. Martin designed several hundred album covers, primarily those of jazz musicians album portraits, mostly done in distinctive heavy black-ink lines, included likenesses of Stan Getz,Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald,Dizzy Gillespie, Jelly Roll Morton and Duke Ellington. Martin did nearly all the covers for the Asch, Clef and Jazz at the Philharmonic labels of the 1940’s and 1950’s

Beautiful images on must-hear lp’s. This is the music, folks, that gets me up each morning. If JIM FLORA had an older brother in graphical hipness, it would be DS Martin.
